Triple bottom line purpose in the Finnish legal landscape

BACKGROUND: This is a Pro Bono work on the permitted purposes of business entities in Finland. The 2021 study  is done on request from B Lab Europe by Castrén & Snellman together with Finnish B Corp Helsinki Capital Partners and Finnish B Corp prospect Futurice.

The Limited Liability Companies Act Chapter 1 Section 5, regarding the purpose of the company, represents so called enlightened value maximisation principle. The current law allows a limited liability company to have a triple bottom line purpose:

(1) people (the social equity bottom line)
(2) planet (the environmental bottom line)
(3) profit (Profit, the economic bottom line)
